The series will begin with an American Innovation Dollar in the first year and continue with four different dollars each year after that. A reverse design is used for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. From 2018 through 2032, 57 variations will be released.
Specifically, the legislation states that the dollar coins shall be issued in the order of the ratification or admission of the states to the Union. Therefore, the District of Columbia coin design will come after the states. In order of release, the designs will be for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
These release dates are based on when the American Innovation Dollars were first offered to the public by the United States Mint as uncirculated coins.
