The American Innovation Dollar Coin recognizes Tennessee’s contributions in recognition of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
By the mid-1930s, 9 out of 10 rural homes still lacked electricity, so the TVA was created in 1933 by Congress to construct transmission lines supplying power to “farms and small villages that cannot otherwise access electricity at reasonable rates.”
Tennessee Valley Authority Act of 1933
On May 18, 1933, President Roosevelt signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act. Under this act, the TVA was established.
The Authority was one of Roosevelt’s alphabet agencies, including the WPA and CCC. They were responsible for implementing the New Deal’s programs.
A significant part of the TVA’s purpose was to make the Tennessee River more navigable, replant marginal lands in the Tennessee Valley watershed, and develop agriculture, commerce, and industry. The TVA also operated Wilson Dam. In addition, the Authority also provided services to Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.
The Tennessee Valley Authority could also acquire land along the Tennessee River and tributaries to construct dams, reservoirs, transmission lines, and power plants.
The TVA was designed to reduce poverty and modernize one of the most impoverished regions in the United States. As a result, everyone had access to reliable and affordable energy. As a result, rural areas received electricity for the first time, promoting economic development and generating jobs.
