2019 Delaware Classifying the Stars - American Innovation Dollar

The first regular release of the series was the Delaware American Innovation Dollar in 2019. In honor of Annie Jump Cannon, a star classification system still used today was developed by her.

Dover, Delaware, was the birthplace of Annie Jump Cannon, who was born December 11, 1863. Mary Elizabeth Jump and Wilson Lee Cannon had their first child, Annie Cannon. She was encouraged to become a scientist by her mother. So when he and Jump were building their observatory together, Jump would open the roof trap door for them to observe the stars.

An astronomer who revolutionized how stars are classified; Annie Jump Cannon was the “census taker of the sky.” Cannon developed the Harvard spectral system and classified approximately 350,000 stars manually. In 1931, she was given the Henry Draper Medal of honor by the National Academy of Sciences for being the first woman to receive the degree of Doctor of Astronomy from Groningen University. In addition, in 1931, she became the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Oxford University.

American Innovation Dollar Characteristics

As seen against the starry night sky, a silhouette of Annie Jump Cannon appears on the reverse design. Some inscriptions read “United States of America,” “Annie Jump Cannon,” and “Classifying the Stars.” Donna Weaver designed the reverse, and Joseph Menna sculpted it.
